I am not sure that I do not agree with you. But isn't the more interesting question (if not more essential): why will this effort not only fail - but it will fail to evoke much passion beyond those most "partisan." This is really just a reiteration of the bumper sticker I have seen intermitently over the last few years- "if you are not angry you are not paying attention."

You have written extensively and thoughtfully about the decline of symbolic efficiency. It seems that politics in such an environment requires the conservative movements approach -scorched earth, win at any price. If the democrats were united behind this effort, it would probably fail but at least it will leave no doubt as to where the battle lines are drawn.

I'm not so sure that the effort does not evoke much passion. Passion may simply flow across a broader logistical glacis while our gaze remains fixed on a small patch of ground – the streets – as a kind of barometer of public concern. At one time the streets did serve as the primary vector for dissent. Wasn't it Engels who said something to the effect that the revolutionary contingent takes shape in the streets, where life circulates with the greatest intensity? But I'm not so sure that this is true these days with the spread of new technologies. So the problem, I guess, is that our representatives are largely out of touch with these new zones of circulation. McCain, for example, doesn't even know how to use a computer. And representatives are naively looking to the streets, just like us.
