hi Jodi,
is that photo yours? I like it. Have you ever seen the movie Reds? There's a funny sequence about blurry photography in one of the early scenes, where someone's response to a piece in a gallery is just to reiterate "it's blurry!". I used to laugh about it a lot when I took photo classes.
As for metaphorical clarity - clarity of intellect and particularly of politics and so on - I think the insecurity is partly one of making a mistake. I think Augustine says somewhere something about wanting to know how to swim before ever getting in the water, I think it's that kind of urge.
