Something about the subprime mess feels a little like the jokey rationalization for Republican spending/tax cuts: they hate government, so they make sure government fails by overspending and underfunding. Here, the twisted logic goes like this : we know the poor are irresponsible and can't manage their lives, so let's loan money to the poor at impossible terms. When they fail, they prove what we knew all along. That banks made money off this makes it all the more twisted. The movie Gamer, within which the poor become living game avatars for the entertainment of the rich, allegorizes the situation beautifully.
