Link: Pharyngula. I found thgis great insight in the middle of a fantasy about a world where the Right controlled the universities and the Left the media. I love the way it makes us think about television (and radio, but not quite as much). How painful that this medium that reaches so many seems so antagonistic, so inappropriate, so inadequate to progressive aspirations. I wonder if it is the medium or the message or something more or something less. Is it what the medium has become or somehow intrinsic to it? I've heard tell of days of live local early tv, when things happened, when there was life. I now find that scary, unimaginable, and sort of wonderful.
It's actually a bit depressing. The right wing is constantly accusing the media of being liberal, but they're wrong. We can imagine a truly liberal/progressive medium, and what we see on our televisions and hear on our radios isn't anything like it. It isn't even close, nor does it even aspire to be the medium of our dreams.
